Cuisine:
The local cuisine is light, fresh, cheap and delightful.
It's less spicy than Thai food, and less oily than Chinese.
Fresh ingredients are always used with lots of herbs and the famous fish
sauce.
The street food, especially Pho [noodle soup] is definitely worth trying for
experienced travellers.
Chinese or French influenced food is widely available, particularly in
Saigon. Travellers will also enjoy fine local coffee and Asia's best French
bread.
Cafe culture is well established, especially in Hanoi.
Restaurants:
Vietnam has a wide range of cuisine available and the
main restaurants are of an excellent standard.
Choices range from English, French, Thai, Malay, Chinese, Indian/Asian as
well as Vietnamese and many others.
The main restaurants accept major credit cards.
Shopping:
Vietnam is a 'shopping heaven', with fabulous handicrafts/ artifacts, which
are colourful, kitsch, fine quality and reasonably priced. Hanoi and Saigon
are loaded with boutiques and bric-a-brac shops.
Try around Dong Khoi St. and Le Thanh Ton St. in Saigon.
Local markets are good places to get souvenirs. Beautiful beads and silk,
particularly Ao Dai [traditional clothes] and shoes, are attractive, as are
lacquerware and wooden dinnerware.
Electricity Supply:
Vietnam uses a 220 volts/50 cycles electric current.
Round two-pin plugs are used.
Computers and other sensitive electrical equipment will need to be protected
from power shortages and surges.
